The short answer
A strong parent training program can teach skills for rules, routines, praise, planning, and behavior. Some programs have a trained leader who can teach, model, watch, and respond.
Lumi helps with a different part of the job. It learns about your child and caregivers, turns ideas into one shared plan, checks in, and helps change the next step.
Side by side
| What to compare | Parent training | Lumi |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Learning and practicing a tested method in depth. | Using one shared family plan in day-to-day life. |
| Main job | Teach parents skills for rules, routines, praise, planning, and behavior. | Learn the family, make a plan, check in, and track progress. |
| How you learn | Lessons, examples, practice, and feedback. The mix depends on the program. | Tell Lumi about your family and one goal. Lumi shapes the next steps. |
| Work between lessons | Parents practice the skills at home. Some programs also give homework or live support. | Caregivers try the same plan. Lumi checks in to learn what happened. |
| Fit for one family | A trained leader may help fit the method to the family. Self-paced courses may give less help. | The plan uses your child profile, caregiver differences, goals, and past check-ins. |
| Across caregivers | Some programs include more than one parent or caregiver. This depends on the program. | Partners, grandparents, and sitters can use the same plan through their own accounts. |
| If an idea fails | Bring it to the next class or visit. In a self-paced course, you may need to change it on your own. | Lumi checks in, saves what happened, and helps keep what worked or change what did not. |
| Progress | A leader may review goals, homework, and skill use. This depends on the program. | Built-in check-ins and progress tracking show how the plan is going. |
| Price | Prices and formats vary. Current examples on this page are $10 once and $31 per month. | Free during the private beta. Limited seats available. |
| Care limits | Some parent training is treatment with a therapist. Many online courses are not therapy. | Lumi does not diagnose or replace therapy, crisis help, or medical care. |
Bottom line: Pick parent training when you want to learn and practice a tested method. Pick Lumi when you want help using one plan across real family life. Use both when the method and the daily plan work well together.
Where parent training is stronger
The CDC says parent training in behavior management can help children with ADHD. Parents often go to 8–16 visits with a therapist.
CHADD says programs may happen one-to-one, in groups, by video, or on the web. A strong program can teach, show, and give feedback while a parent practices new skills.
Parent training’s clearest strength is deep practice with a clear method.
The work between lessons
A 2026 study spoke with 16 parents with ADHD symptoms and 4 clinicians. It asked why it can be hard to use parent training skills at home.
The study found four kinds of barriers: the parent’s own planning and ADHD needs; a fast pace or unclear skill; big feelings and motivation; and family needs such as more than one child or hard communication.
This was a small study. It did not test Lumi. It does show why learning a skill and using it in a hard moment can be two different jobs.
Where Lumi is different
Lumi learns how your child thinks and how each caregiver works with them. It can use a helpful method, along with what it knows about your family, to shape one plan.
Each caregiver can use the same steps. One parent does not have to hold and repeat every detail alone.
Then Lumi checks in. You share what helped and what made things harder. Lumi helps you keep the useful parts and change the next step.

Lumi may be better when your family wants one shared plan, check-ins, and progress. Parent training may be better when you want to learn and practice a tested method with a trained leader.
Parent training teaches parents a method and skills to practice. Lumi learns about your child and caregivers, turns ideas into one shared plan, checks in, and helps change the next step.
Lumi is free during its private beta. Parent training prices vary. Current examples on this page include a $10 one-time mini-course and a $31-per-month membership.
Lumi can replace some self-guided help with day-to-day plans and check-ins. It does not replace clinician-led parent training when that treatment is what your child or family needs.
Choose parent training if you want to learn a tested method in depth, practice it, and get teaching or feedback from a trained leader.
Yes. A parent training program can teach the method. Lumi can help your caregivers use one shared plan, note what happened, and bring clear questions back to the next class or visit.
