How-To Guides

Step-by-step walkthroughs for the things you’ll do most.

1

Set up your household for the first time

WHAT THIS HELPS YOU DO

Get your family set up in Lumi so everything is personalized to your child from day one.

WHEN TO USE THIS

Use this guide when you first sign in and want to add your child's profile before doing anything else.

STEPS

  1. 1
Click your name in the top right corner of the screen.
  2. 2
Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  3. 3
    Click the Household tab.
  4. 4
    Click Add Member.
  5. 5
Choose Child as the profile type.
  6. 6
Enter your child's first name, birth month, and birth year.
  7. 7
If your child has any diagnosed neurological or developmental conditions, toggle those on. You can always add or change this later.
  8. 8
    Click Save.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

✅ Your child's profile is now active. You can start creating checklists and building their Mental Model right away.

💡 You can add more than one child. Just repeat these steps for each one. Each child gets their own separate profile.

IF SOMETHING LOOKS OFF

To edit a profile after creating it, go back to Settings > Household, find the person, and click Edit next to their name.

2

Create your child's first checklist

WHAT THIS HELPS YOU DO

Build a routine checklist for your child — morning, homework, bedtime, or anything else your family needs.

WHEN TO USE THIS

Use this the first time you want to set up a routine, or any time you want to add a new one.

Option A — Let Lumi build it for you (recommended)

  1. 1
Click Checklists in the left menu.
  2. 2
In the chat area at the top, type a description of what you need. Be specific — include your child's name, what the routine is for, and roughly how long it should take. Example: 'Create a morning routine for my 9-year-old that takes about 20 minutes and ends by 7:30am.'
  3. 3
Send your message and answer any follow-up questions Lumi asks.
  4. 4
When Lumi has enough information, a Create button will appear. Click it.
  5. 5
Your checklist will appear in your list below.

💡 The more specific you are in step 2, the better the checklist. If it's for a timed routine, mention the time target. Lumi uses that to set up bonus time and no-excuse time thresholds automatically.

Option B — Build it manually

  1. 1
Click Checklists in the left menu.
  2. 2
Click Create Checklist in the top right corner.
  3. 3
Give the checklist a name and choose which child it's for.
  4. 4
Add a short description if you want. This is optional.
  5. 5
Toggle on Timed Checklist if this routine has a time target.
  6. 6
Click Save, then add your steps one by one.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

✅ Your checklist is saved and ready to use. Find it in your Checklists list. Tap it any time to open it with your child.

IF SOMETHING LOOKS OFF

To edit a checklist after creating it, hover over it in the list and click the three-dot menu (⋯), then select Edit.

3

Run a checklist with your child

WHAT THIS HELPS YOU DO

Walk your child through a checklist — step by step, with or without voice support.

WHEN TO USE THIS

Any time your child is starting a routine and needs to work through it.

  1. 1
Click Checklists in the left menu.
  2. 2
Find your child's checklist and click it to open it.
  3. 3
If this is a timed checklist, you'll see a banner at the top showing how much time is left before bonus time, or before the deadline. Glance at it with your child so they know where they stand.
  4. 4
Your child clicks each item as they complete it. The item will be struck through and the progress bar will move forward.
  5. 5
For the current step, your child will see tips and prompts underneath it — personalized to how they work best. If they don't want to see those, click Hide Details at the top.
  6. 6
If voice mode is on (it is by default), Lumi will read each step out loud. To turn it off, click the voice mode button in the checklist header.
  7. 7
When all steps are done, the checklist is complete.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

✅ Lumi triggers a full-screen celebration with confetti and a message. Your child gets a moment of recognition before moving on.

💡 If your child needs more time than usual, click Adjust in the time banner to temporarily disable timing or shift the thresholds just for today. Everything resets automatically at midnight.

IF SOMETHING LOOKS OFF

If the checklist steps are in the wrong order, you can drag any item to rearrange it. Hover over the item and drag it up or down.

4

Build your child's Mental Model profile

WHAT THIS HELPS YOU DO

Create a personalized profile of how your child thinks and works — so everything Lumi does is tailored to them specifically.

WHEN TO USE THIS

Do this once when you first set up Lumi, then update it every few months as your child grows and changes.

  1. 1
Click Mental Models in the left menu.
  2. 2
You'll see your child's name with a note that no profile exists yet. Click Create Profile (or the button that says Create Mental Model).
  3. 3
You'll be taken directly to a short questionnaire for your child. Answer each question as honestly and specifically as you can — there are no wrong answers.
  4. 4
Complete the questionnaire and click Submit.
  5. 5
Lumi will generate your child's full profile. This takes a moment.
  6. 6
Once it's ready, you'll see their Mental Model — a chart of their executive function strengths and challenges, plus Collaboration Principles written specifically for them.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

✅ From this point on, Lumi uses your child's profile to personalize checklist prompts, strategy recommendations, and coaching conversations.

💡 Collaboration Principles are the most immediately useful part of the profile. Click any one to expand it and read specific suggestions for working with your child day-to-day.

IF SOMETHING LOOKS OFF

Scroll to the bottom of your child's profile page and click Refresh Insights for a quick regeneration. If the profile still seems off, click Update on the profile card and go through the questionnaire again with updated answers.

5

Create a strategy for a specific challenge

WHAT THIS HELPS YOU DO

Get a personalized, step-by-step plan for a recurring challenge — homework battles, morning meltdowns, transitions, whatever keeps coming up for your family.

WHEN TO USE THIS

When you're dealing with something specific that keeps happening and you want a structured approach to try.

Option A — Start from the Mental Models page

  1. 1
Click Mental Models in the left menu.
  2. 2
On your child's profile card, click Strategize.
  3. 3
Select at least one executive function area you want to focus on. These are based on your child's profile, so you'll see the ones most relevant to them.
  4. 4
Choose how long you want to work on this: one week, two weeks, one month, or three months.
  5. 5
Click Create Strategy. Lumi will open a chat and ask a few questions to understand what's going on.
  6. 6
Answer the questions. The more specific you are about what the situation actually looks like at home, the better the strategy.
  7. 7
Lumi will generate your strategy and save it.

Option B — Start from the Strategies page

  1. 1
Click Strategies in the left menu.
  2. 2
In the chat area at the top, describe the challenge. Example: 'Harrison completely shuts down when it's time to start homework. It happens almost every day around 4pm.'
  3. 3
Follow the same steps as Option A from step 5 onward.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

✅ Your strategy is saved and ready to use. Open it any time and click Start Now to walk through it step by step, or read it through and work through it on your own.

💡 Shorter durations work better at first. Try a one-week or two-week strategy before committing to a month. You can always create a new one when it's done.

IF SOMETHING LOOKS OFF

If the strategy doesn't feel right for your child, go back to Strategies, open it, and start a new one. The more context you give Lumi about the specific situation, the better the output.

6

Add events to your family calendar

WHAT THIS HELPS YOU DO

Track what your child needs to do and when — so everything is in one place and easy to act on.

WHEN TO USE THIS

Any time you want to add a school event, appointment, activity, or to-do to your family's calendar.

Option A — Use the chat (recommended for recurring events)

  1. 1
Click Calendar in the left menu.
  2. 2
Click Show Chat in the top right to open the chat panel.
  3. 3
Describe the event naturally. Example: 'Add soccer practice for Mateo every Tuesday and Thursday at 4pm starting this week.'
  4. 4
Lumi will confirm what it's adding. If anything looks off, just say so and it'll adjust.

Option B — Create an event manually

  1. 1
Click Calendar in the left menu.
  2. 2
Click Create Event in the top right.
  3. 3
Fill in the title, date, time, and which child it's for.
  4. 4
Expand More Options to add a description, category, priority, or duration if you want.
  5. 5
    Click Save.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

✅ The event appears on your calendar. Click it to open the details panel, where you can attach a checklist or strategy directly to it.

💡 Use the 1 / 3 / 5 / 7 buttons at the top of the calendar to switch between day views. The Stacked view (default) is usually easiest for kids to read — it shows just what needs to happen without all the empty time in between.

IF SOMETHING LOOKS OFF

Click the event on the calendar, then click the edit icon in the details panel to make changes. Press Escape to close the details panel when you're done.

7

Read and use your weekly insights

WHAT THIS HELPS YOU DO

Understand what's been happening with your child's routines over the past week — and get concrete ideas for what to do about it.

WHEN TO USE THIS

Once a week, ideally over the weekend or at the start of a new week. Treat it like a brief check-in on how things are going.

  1. 1
Click Insights in the left menu.
  2. 2
You'll land on the Snapshot view by default. Read the highlights at the top — these are Lumi's top one to three observations from the week.
  3. 3
Look at the checklist chart. Each column is a day of the week. Green means your child finished during bonus time. Dark gray means they finished but not during bonus time. Empty means nothing was completed that day.
  4. 4
Scroll down to the Worth Exploring section. These are conversation starters based on what actually happened that week. Click any one to open a coaching chat with the context already loaded.
  5. 5
If you want more depth, click Brief at the top to switch to the written narrative view. This gives you a more detailed summary of the week for each child.
  6. 6
In the Brief view, you'll also see Things to Consider — click any of those to start a focused coaching conversation.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

✅ You walk away with a clear picture of the week and at least one concrete conversation or action to take. The insights reset each week automatically.

💡 The navigation arrows at the top let you look back at previous weeks. Single arrows go back one week at a time. Double arrows jump back four weeks.

⚠️ Insights require at least one full week of checklist activity to generate. If the page looks empty, keep using the app for a few more days and check back.

IF SOMETHING LOOKS OFF

If the insights don't match what you experienced that week, the data is based on checklist activity in the app. If checklists weren't being used consistently, that will be reflected in what you see.

8

Invite a co-parent or caregiver

WHAT THIS HELPS YOU DO

Give another adult in your household — a partner, co-parent, grandparent, or caregiver — their own login so they can use Lumi too.

WHEN TO USE THIS

Any time you want another adult to have full access to your household, including checklists, strategies, calendar, and your child's profile.

  1. 1
Click your name in the top right corner of the screen.
  2. 2
    Select Settings.
  3. 3
    Click the Household tab.
  4. 4
Scroll down to the Invite section.
  5. 5
Enter the person's first name, last name, and email address.
  6. 6
    Click Send Invitation.
  7. 7
They'll receive an email with a link to create their account. Once they accept, they'll be connected to your household automatically.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

✅ You'll see their invitation appear in the Pending Invitations list below. Once they accept, they'll show up as a household member.

💡 The invited person will have full access to your household — the same checklists, strategies, calendar, and child profiles you see. There are no separate logins for 'limited' access at this time.

IF SOMETHING LOOKS OFF

If the invitation isn't showing up in their inbox, ask them to check their spam folder. You can resend from the Pending Invitations list if needed.

9

Help your child when they get stuck mid-checklist

WHAT THIS HELPS YOU DO

Break down a step your child is struggling with — on the fly, without losing their place in the checklist.

WHEN TO USE THIS

When your child hits a step that feels too hard, too vague, or just stops them cold. This is especially useful for homework or multi-step tasks.

  1. 1
Open the checklist your child is working through.
  2. 2
Find the step they're stuck on. Hover over it.
  3. 3
Click the Break It Down button that appears on the right side of that step.
  4. 4
A small box will pop up asking what makes this step hard. Type a quick description — even a few words helps. Example: 'She doesn't know how to start' or 'Too many things to think about at once.'
  5. 5
Click Proceed (or Tell Me More if you want Lumi to ask a follow-up question first).
  6. 6
Lumi will create a mini-checklist that breaks that one step into smaller pieces. It will open automatically in a new panel to the right of the main checklist.
  7. 7
Your child works through the mini-checklist. When they're done, they close it and continue from where they left off in the main checklist.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

✅ Your child gets through the hard step without abandoning the whole checklist. The mini-checklist is also saved automatically if you want to use it again.

💡 You don't need to have the child's Mental Model set up for this to work, but if you do, the broken-down steps will be personalized to how your child learns best.

IF SOMETHING LOOKS OFF

If the mini-checklist doesn't feel right, just close it and try again with a different description of what's making the step hard. More specificity usually gets a better result.

10

  3. 3

  1. 1
Use the search bar at the top of the Checklists page. Start typing the name and the list will filter instantly.
  2. 2
Use the filter buttons to show only one child's checklists, or toggle Favorites Only to see just your favorites.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

✅ Your checklist library stays manageable as your family grows and routines change.

⚠️ Deleted checklists cannot be recovered. Duplicate before deleting if you think you might want it again.
